DOI:10.1590/2179-8966/2017/30244Resumo O artigo identifica em O Estado e a revolução, de Lênin, a elaboração de uma hipótese sobre o desenvolvimento da democracia e do capitalismo cuja plausibilidade tem se tornado cada vez mais forte no atual contexto de compatibilidade entre medidas autoritárias, neoliberais e arranjos democrático-constitucionais. Diferentemente da concepção forjada nos trente glorieuses anos do pós-guerra, que identificava democracia liberal e capitalismo como esferas diferenciadas e harmonizáveis (pelo sistema de representatividade e de bem-estar), sustenta-se que não há separação nem conflito entre ambas as esferas. Dessa perspectiva, o artigo recupera, por meio do texto de Lênin, a ideia de que a violência é constitutiva do aparelho estatal. Rejeita, no entanto, as leituras que inferem desse texto uma concepção meramente instrumentalista do Estado. Ao contrário, argumenta-se que Lênin trabalha com um sentido específico de alienação, que permite observar o Estado como o poder da classe dominante que se exterioriza de si e, ao mesmo tempo, se duplica na forma de uso da violência especial e organizada. Ao final, a partir de Trotsky, Gramsci e Wood, o artigo analisa como a democracia liberal se amalgama a esse poder repressor e coercitivo contra as classes populares. Palavras-Chaves: Teoria marxista do Estado; capitalismo; democracia; violência.  Abstract The article identifies in Lênin's State and Revolution the elaboration of a hypothesis on the development of democracy and capitalism, the plausibility of which has become increasingly strong in the current context of compatibility between authoritarian and neoliberal measures and democratic-constitutional arrangements. Unlike the conception forged during the trente glorieuses years of the post-war period, which identified liberal democracy and capitalism as differentiated and harmonized spheres (through representative system and welfare), we argue that there is no separation or conflict between the two spheres. From this perspective, the article recovers, through Lênin's text, the idea that violence is constitutive of the state apparatus. We reject, however, the readings that deduce from this text a merely instrumentalist conception of the State. On the contrary, we state that Lênin works with a specific sense of the concept of alienation, which allows one to observe the State as the power of the ruling class that externalizes itself and, at the same time, duplicates itself in the form of use of a special and organized violence. In the end, taking works of Trotsky, Gramsci, and Wood, the article analyses how liberal democracy amalgamates with this repressive and coercive power against the popular classes.
