This dissertation discusses the analysis of the book A Candidata, by the Cape Verdean writer Vera Duarte (2012). In the present research, we seek to explain that this novel was written through a historical-critical discourse, Therefore, we intend to elucidate that the work in question describes the struggle for liberation from a decolonial, feminine, and Creole perspective. When portraying the colonial period and the democratization process of Cape Verde, the writer managed to investigate the paths and sinuosities overlooked or hidden by the official history as she had the opportunity to revisit and reevaluate the past, showing the oppression, control, and violence of a social order that was hierarchized with distinctive attributions for colonizers and colonized. In this work, we also seek to present that education was one of the tools that promoted the dissemination of independence ideals in the Cape Verdean population, even when access to regular education was not a right for the entire population of that country. Therefore, Marina, uncle Joaozinho, and Pedro, among other characters, represent how a critical education, even though clandestinely taught, was liberating. To support our theories, we will be based on texts by different specialists such as Daniel Pereira (2011), Simone Caputo Gomes (2008), Paulo Freire (2019), Linda Hutcheon (1991), Norma Sueli Rosa Lima (2020) and other.
