This work is a reflective exercise on the literary trajectory and the poetic art of Manuel Carneiro de Souza Bandeira Filho in the 20 s and the 30 s. By reading his correspondence with Mário Raul de Morais Andrade, and his writings for the press, we analyze the multiple traits displayed by this important poet from Pernambuco and we seek to show general features of his conception of life and poetry. Therefore, in this dissertation, the epistolary genre and the chronic are considered notable objects of studying for the Brazilian literature. The correspondence with Andrade acquires importance in the intellectual production of Manuel Bandeira, because it allows a greater understanding of the poet from his autobiographic writing, as it allows to observe the writer s concern about the memory of Brazilian culture. Likewise, chronic becomes important because it brings the chronicler s witness of the surrounding time. When we go through a significant part of Manuel Bandeira s narrative, we set the comparison with his memorialistic text Itinerário de Pasárgada, by tracking, in these sources, the writings that expose his positioning in relation to the innovations of modern art
