Idosos com demência de Alzheimer: a produção científica da terapia ocupacional.

The thesis aimed to identify, characterize and analyze the Brazilian and international scientific production among Alzheimer's disease, the role of occupational therapists in the intervention process of older adults with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers/family members, as well to present the organization of the body of knowledge of the occupational therapy interventions. An exploratory, descriptive study of literature was conducted, in a 10-year period (2006-2015), in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Web of Science, MEDLINE / PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO®, LILACS, SciELO, OTSeeker, and PEDro databases were used as sources of information. We identified 2047 records and 79 articles which met the inclusion criteria were selected for deeper analysis: scientific publications related to Alzheimer's disease in older adults with the participation of at least one occupational therapist as an author; or to discuss occupational therapy in Alzheimer's disease without restrictions on the stage of the disease and within the time frame and pre-selected languages. For the preparation of the process of occupational therapy and the conceptual map terminology proposed by the " Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and process," 3rd edition of the American Association of Occupational Therapy was used. The conceptual map has been created to organize the body of knowledge of the interventions of occupational therapy in assisting the older adults with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. The panorama showed a disparity between the international and national scientific production regarding volume and quality of the studies. In the evaluation process, it was observed an approach centered on elder-caregiver dyad, with concerns directed to the awareness of the disease, quality of life, access to community resources and performance analysis during complex daily activities. In the intervention process, there is evidence available that confirm the effect of interventions in improving the functional capacity of the older adults, through actions using occupations as a treatment resource, cognitive stimulation, environmental changes (physical and social) and/or the educational program for caregivers. This study also showed the importance of understanding the social impact on the lives of people with Alzheimer's and their families and the necessary changes in family dynamics to meet the needs of these individuals. It is considered that the scientific literature is legitimate sources to highlight the values of a profession and to promote the development of public policies that will organize the supply of the services to the population. The lack of Brazilian publications and the democratization of information in a globalized world acted as motivation to use the knowledge produced internationally. Thus, Brazilian occupational therapists face the challenge of the need for publications on interventions with greater methodological rigor to justify the effectiveness of their actions and their inclusion in the shared professional practice at the different levels of health care for the older adults.
