Resumo: The article analyzes the territorial rearrangements and the evolution of the clerical staff in the Church of Maranhão throughout the 20th century. The analysis sought to apprehend the changes in the global architecture of that specific component of the Church, as well as the territorial strategies in dispute. The work also brought out some concrete evidences for the assessment of the objective relationships that kept those elements together and ensured their perpetuation and transformation. The main results suggest that a complex process of territorial (re)organization of powers in the Catholic Church of Maranhão gave rise to the emergence of a new type of relationship between the religious institution and the local society.
