Resumo: The text was published in 1992, exactly 30 years ago, after the impact of the end of the Soviet Union the previous year. It aimed to inform Geography students, on the one hand, the process of territorial formation of the Russian Empire and its continuity through the Soviet Union, followed by the description of the new countries that formed the Commonwealth of Independent States, also highlighting the internal subdivisions: republics and autonomous regions. Its republication now takes on a special meaning with the unfolding of the current war in Ukraine.
