This paper presents an analysis of the process of technology transfer from the academia to the productive sector from the point of view of lean systems. The goal is to identify improvement opportunities at the mechanisms used to make the approach between university and society. The analysis was carried out at the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Methods and tools adapted from Lean Systems were used. A Value Stream Map was developed for the entire technology transfer process. The process was organized in five possible stages: (i) results generated by the applied research, (ii) intellectual property protection, (iii) generation of startups, (iv) approaching aiming the technology transfer, and (v) interaction for the development of technology those involved. The focus of the study is based on the identification of the different mechanisms used to make the approaching between these actors and their efficiency in terms of effecting the transference.
