Uncertain sexes: ambiguity and difference in Herculine Barbin’s autobiography

Resumo: Adèlaïde Herculine Barbin was a French teacher diagnosed as a “male hermaphrodite” at the age of 21. After having her civil status rectified, she was renamed Abel Barbin. In 1868, already living as a man, Herculine committed suicide. Beside her body, the manuscript entitled My Memories was found, in which she narrated the misfortunes and joys of her brief existence. My Memories indicates that a specific question was insistently addressed to Herculine: what is her real sex? However, she had dismantled this issue somehow. Following Herculine’s autobiography, we draw two lines of investigation. In the first, we followed how European medicine in the late 19th century was obstinate in unraveling the true sex of individuals. In the second, we followed the potential of My Memories to transform the question addressed to Herculine, which presented the sex/gender system with an energetic question: do we really need a real sex?

Junto a su cuerpo, encontraron el manuscrito Memorias, en el cual narraba las desventuras y alegrías de su breve existencia. Las Memorias muestran que la pregunta, ¿cuál es tu sexo verdadero?, fue insistentemente dirigida a Herculine, quien, de cierta forma, desarticuló esa cuestión. Acompañando la autobiografía de Herculine, trazamos aquí dos líneas de investigación. En la primera, revisamos cómo la medicina europea del final del siglo XIX se mostró obstinada en revelar el “verdadero” sexo de los individuos. En la segunda, seguimos las potencialidades de las Memorias para trastornar la pregunta enderezada a Herculine, que devolvió al sistema sexo/género una energética interrogación: ¿precisamos realmente de un verdadero sexo?Adèlaïde Herculine Barbin foi uma professora francesa que viveu durante o século 19. Aos 21 anos de idade, foi diagnosticada como intersexo e teve seu status civil retificado, passando a ser considerada um homem, agora chamado Abel Herculine Barbin. Aos 30 anos, sua história encontrou um fim repentino: Herculine cometeu suicídio. Ao lado de seu corpo, foi encontrado o manuscrito Minhas Memórias. Seus relatos narram os prazeres e as desventuras do que ela nomeia como sua dupla e estranha existência. Ao mesmo tempo, as Memórias nos mostram como a vida e a anatomia de Herculine foram investigadas e debatidas pelos médicos da época. Repetidamente, uma pergunta era endereçada a Herculine: qual seu verdadeiro sexo? Neste artigo, traçamos, junto às Memórias de Herculine Barbin, duas linhas de investigação interligadas. Na primeira delas, nos dedicamos a investigar, de forma breve, como a medicina europeia do final do século 19 se mostrou obstinada em desvendar o verdadeiro sexo dos indivíduos. Realçamos algumas discordâncias no campo das ciências quanto aos corpos “ambíguos”, demonstrando que esses saberes se viam às voltas com incertezas quando se tratava das características a serem analisadas para a atribuição do sexo de pessoas como Herculine. Na segunda linha, delineamos um caminho diferente. Trata-se de ler as Memórias a contrapelo, ou seja, de ir de encontro às potencialidades dessa narrativa para transtornar a questão do verdadeiro sexo, revolvendo-a na direção de novas conexões coletivas, afetivas e inventivas. Herculine coloca em ação uma escrita enérgica e fragmentada, na qual o sexo já quase não conta mais. Com isso, ela devolve ao sistema sexo/gênero, de maneira metamorfoseada, a interrogação sobre o seu verdadeiro sexo, abrindo a seguinte questão: nós realmente precisamos de um verdadeiro sexo?
