“A little window, a little light at the end of the tunnel”: meanings of being at the university for black quota students

Resumo: The objective of this paper is to present an analysis of social representations of black quota students on the meaning of their insertions at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). As methodological procedure, we conducted sixteen interviews about the trajectories of black quota students from the most diverse undergraduate courses in Viçosa. The research reveals that the dream of studying at a recognized University is of the individual and their respective families. Both, family and student, expect that as a result of their studies, young people may have good jobs and access to material resources that minimize their family members' difficulties. The experiences in the University revealed that she has a deficit humanistic formation and that it would need to promote greater dialogue with the society that surrounds it, like this the presence of these agents can contribute to reflection on the potentialities and limitations of university formation.

Como procedimento metodológico, realizamos dezesseis entrevistas com estudantes cotistas negros/as dos mais diversos cursos de graduação em Viçosa. A pesquisa revela que o sonho de estudar numa reconhecida Universidade é do indivíduo e de suas respectivas famílias. Ambos, família e estudante, têm a expectativa de que em decorrência dos estudos os/as jovens possam ter bons empregos e acesso a recursos materiais que minimizem suas dificuldades e de seus familiares.
