Biodigestion is an old and well known procedure quite widespread in several countries, such as China, India and others, although many efforts were made by researchers and financial resources were invested during the 70s and 80s, this program was not successful in Brazil. Today, with the launching of the FOME ZERO (HUNGER ZERO) program by the Federal government, Paty do Alferes, 120km away from the city of Rio de Janeiro, has all the conditions for the beginning of a successful biodigesters program. The county main economic activity is intensive agriculture, with 90% of it by small farmers, with individual areas of cultivation not bigger than 10 ha. Due to the nature of crops tomatoes, chiefly - huge amounts of agrochemicals fertilizers are employed, which generates wastes contaminated with pests, diseases, toxic substances and, therefore, environmental degradation. The use of agricultural leftovers for the generation of biogas should improve the economic status of the local inhabitants because the fuel would replace GLP gas and wood for cookie use, as well as chemical fertilizers, contributing to a reduction in the cost of production and the improvement of the standard of living of the population, besides preventing excessive felling of trees for domestic burn.
