Summary: Currently, the school handbook is the educational tool most commonly used by teachers and students. In the Portuguese educational context, it enjoys a privileged status, enshrined in the legal provisions themselves. The central importance of this pedagogical tool is also undeniable with regard to the teaching and learning of the Portuguese language. Given the strong presence of the School Handbook in the teaching-learning processes of the Portuguese/Portuguese subject, our main objective is to verify, through a “case study”, whether the Handbook plays a crucial role in the (con)formation of ideas, practices and representations about the language, about the teaching-learning process of this language, about the role of the different actors in this process, about the validity of certain contents and/or methods, etc., as they explicitly and/or implicitly convey the ideas and representations of the authors and editors about these aspects.
