A prophet of speed: the case of Ray Kurzweil and a reflection on the construction of a prophetic philosophy of history

Resumo: | This article proposes to seek, in the formation of the Artificial Intelligence imaginary of the 1990s and 2000s, the social reasons for the construction of optimism about the future, with the hypothesis that disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence launch themselves into the public sphere as producers of images of the future powerful enough to become, in popular parlance, a kind of historical consciousness suited to neoliberalism, examining the exemplary case of Raymond Kurzweil. Initially, some assumptions of the sci-fi culture in which these discourses are formed will be addressed. Then, attention will be given to the discussion of the importance of the biography of the prophet, Kurzweil, in order to analyze the importance of the theme of the founding guru, the prophet, in the social construction of optimism with technology along with the new idea of personality. Then, based on the previous assumptions, the modalities of historical consciousness that propagate through them will be analyzed: the agency of the self in futurism, the issue of technology and the type of relationship between historical destiny and individual destiny. Our hypothesis is that the futurists are not the prophets of futurism, but of updatism, and that the construction and public fortune of this imaginary has as its backbone the idea that the biography of an exemplary individual is nothing less than a reproduction in micro scale of world biography. |

Inicialmente, se abordarán algunos supuestos de la cultura sci-fi en la que se forman estos discursos. Luego, se prestará atención a la discusión sobre la importancia de la biografía del profeta Kurzweil, para analizar la importancia del tema del gurú fundador, el profeta, en la construcción social del optimismo con la tecnología junto con la nueva idea de personalidad. Luego, con base en los presupuestos anteriores, se analizarán las modalidades de la conciencia histórica que se propagan a través de ellos: la agencia del yo en el futurismo, el tema de la tecnología y el tipo de relación entre el destino histórico y el destino individual. Nuestra hipótesis es que los futuristas no son los profetas del futurismo, sino del actualismo, y que la construcción y fortuna pública de este imaginario tiene como eje la idea de que la biografía de un individuo ejemplar es nada menos que una reproducción en escala micro de biografía mundial.Cet article propose de chercher, dans la formation de l'imaginaire de l'Intelligence Artificielle des années 1990 et 2000, les raisons sociales de la construction de l'optimisme sur l'avenir, avec l'hypothèse que des disciplines telles que l'Intelligence Artificielle se lancent dans la sphère publique comme productrices de des images du futur suffisamment puissantes pour devenir, dans le langage populaire, une sorte de conscience historique propre au néolibéralisme, en examinant le cas exemplaire de Raymond Kurzweil. Dans un premier temps, certaines hypothèses de la culture de science-fiction dans laquelle ces discours sont formés seront abordées. Ensuite, une attention sera accordée à la discussion de l'importance de la biographie du prophète Kurzweil, afin d'analyser l'importance du thème du gourou fondateur, le prophète, dans la construction sociale de l'optimisme avec la technologie ainsi que la nouvelle idée de personnalité. Puis, à partir des hypothèses précédentes, seront analysées les modalités de la conscience historique qui s'y propagent : l'agentivité de soi dans le futurisme, la question de la technologie et le type de relation entre destin historique et destin individuel. Notre hypothèse est que les futuristes ne sont pas les prophètes du futurisme, mais de l'actualisme, et que la construction et la fortune publique de cet imaginaire a pour colonne vertébrale l'idée que la biographie d'un individu exemplaire n'est rien de moins qu'une reproduction à échelle microscopique de biographie mondiale.Questo articolo si propone di ricercare, nella formazione dell'immaginario di Intelligenza Artificiale degli anni Novanta e Duemila, le ragioni sociali per la costruzione dell'ottimismo sul futuro, con l'ipotesi che discipline come l'Intelligenza Artificiale si lanceranno nella sfera pubblica come produttrici di immagini del futuro abbastanza potenti da diventare, nel linguaggio popolare, una sorta di coscienza storica adatta al neoliberismo, esaminando il caso esemplare di Raymond Kurzweil. Inizialmente verranno affrontati alcuni presupposti della cultura fantascientifica in cui si formano questi discorsi. Si porrà poi attenzione alla discussione sull'importanza della biografia del profeta Kurzweil, per analizzare l'importanza del tema del guru fondatore, il profeta, nella costruzione sociale dell'ottimismo con la tecnologia insieme al nuovo idea di personalità. Quindi, sulla base dei presupposti precedenti, verranno analizzate le modalità della coscienza storica che attraverso di esse si propagano: l'agenzia del sé nel futurismo, la questione della tecnologia e il tipo di rapporto tra destino storico e destino individuale. La nostra ipotesi è che i futuristi non siano i profeti del futurismo, ma dell'attualismo, e che la costruzione e la fortuna pubblica di questo immaginario abbia come spina dorsale l'idea che la biografia di un individuo esemplare non sia altro che una riproduzione in micro scala di biografia mondiale.Esse artigo se propõe a buscar, na formação do imaginário da Inteligência Artificial dos anos 1990 e 2000, as razões sociais da construção do otimismo em relação ao futuro, com a hipótese de que disciplinas como a Inteligência Artificial lançam-se à esfera pública como produtoras de imagens de futuro poderosas o suficiente para que se tornem, na linguagem popular, um tipo de consciência histórica adequada ao neoliberalismo, examinando o caso exemplar de Raymond Kurzweil. Inicialmente, serão abordados alguns pressupostos da cultura sci-fi na qual se formam esses discursos. Depois, será dada uma atenção à discussão da importância da biografia do profeta, Kurzweil, na intenção de analisar a importância do tema do guru fundador, do profeta, na construção social do otimismo com a tecnologia junto com a nova ideia de personalidade. Em seguida, serão analisados, a partir dos pressupostos anteriores, as modalidades de consciência histórica que se propagam através deles: o agenciamento de si no futurismo, a questão da tecnologia e o tipo de relação entre destino histórico e destino individual.
