Resumo: The article proposes to reflect on the foundations of conservative thinking from the analysis of fragments of works by Edmund Burke, Joseph de Maistre and Juan Donoso Cortés. In the present proposal conservatism is understood as an element of cohesion in party politics, having as object the General Assembly of 1881, the first composed under the electoral reform that introduced the direct vote in the country. We hypothe sized that conservative ideas predominated in the parliamentary discourses of this legislature (1881-1884) and guided the conduct in polls and alliances between the imperial parties.

Na presente proposta o conservadorismo é compreendido como elemento de coesão na política partidária, tendo como objeto a Assembleia Geral de 1881, a primeira composta sob a reforma eleitoral que introduziu o voto direto no país.
