Suicide attempt in adolescents’ perception: a descriptive study

Resumo: This study sought to know and analyze the reasons why adolescents attempt suicide and the methods used by them to achieve this event. Descriptive research, developed in a hospital located in a municipality of Rio Grande do Sul, in 2007. To collect data we used semi-structured interview. The subjects were three individuals that attempted suicide, with ages between 13 and 18 years.  The data analysis followed the established steps for the thematic analysis, which was built in a theme that focuses on the methods and motives that lead adolescents to attempt against life. It was identified that family conflicts represented the main reason to suicide attempts between the participants of the study. Suicide in adolescence is in itself an issue that deserves debate and requires preventive and informational programs to minimize the occurrence of the act.Descriptors: Suicide, attempted; Adolescent behavior; Nursing.

Investigación descriptiva, desarrollada en un hospital localizado en un municipio de Río Grande do Sul, en 2007. Para recoger los datos se utilizó la encuesta semi-estructurada. Los participantes de la investigación fueron tres individuos que intentaran suicidio en la adolescencia, con edad entre 13 y 18 años. El análisis de los datos siguió los pasos establecidos para el análisis de contenido que se construyó en un tema que se centra en los métodos y las motivaciones que los adolescentes llevan a ir en contra de la vida. Se identificó que los conflictos familiares representaron la principal causa de las tentativas de suicidio entre los participantes estudiados. El suicidio en la adolescencia es en sí mismo un tema que merece debate y requiere programas de prevención y de información para reducir al mínimo la ocurrencia del hecho.Descriptores: Intento de suicidio; Conducta del Adolescente; Enfermería.O objetivo deste estudo foi conhecer e analisar as razões que levaram adolescentes a tentar suicídio e os métodos por eles utilizados para concretizar este evento. Pesquisa descritiva, desenvolvida em uma instituição hospitalar localizada em um município do Rio Grande do Sul, em 2007. Para a coleta de dados foi utilizado a entrevista semiestruturada. Os sujeitos de pesquisa foram três indivíduos que tentaram o suicídio, com idade entre 13 e 18 anos. A análise dos dados seguiu os passos estabelecidos para análise temática em que foi construído um tema que aborda sobre os métodos e os motivos que levam adolescentes a atentarem contra a vida. Identificou-se que os conflitos familiares representaram a principal causa das tentativas de suicídio entre os participantes estudados.
