The characterization of communication in breastfeeding counseling

http://dx.doi.org/10.5216/ree.v14i2.12748The objective of this study was to characterize the communication in the process of breastfeeding counseling. This descriptive-exploratory study, using qualitative data analysis, was performed at a public maternity hospital by conducting semi-structured interviews with 19 nursing students and three nurses who provided breastfeeding counseling. The data were submitted to thematic content analysis, and four categories emerged: Counseling and communication; Verbal and non-verbal communication in breastfeeding counseling; Communication barriers during breastfeeding counseling; and Facilitating factors of communication during breastfeeding counseling. The data showed that the quality of the communication in the process of counseling is essential to guarantee greater adherence to exclusive breastfeeding and that its local cultural adequacy is key for a successful outcome. The study implies that it is essential to develop interpersonal communication skills in order to guarantee women’s adherence to breastfeeding through these interventions.
