Summary: | The aim of the present research was to evaluate the efficiency of different pre-germinating methods for breaking the dormancy of sapodilla (Achras sapota L.) seeds. The treatments were: control; immersion in water at 60 and 70°C until cooling to the environment temperature (27°C), scarification with sandpaper no 100, followed by water imbibition for 24 and 48 hours, and stratification in sand, in the refrigerator (10 ± 1°C) for five days. The seeds were placed to germinate at depth of 2.0 cm in trays containing sand and dung (3:1), distributed in four repetitions of 25 seeds, in a greenhouse at the seeds sector of Centro de Ciências Agrárias da UFPB, Areia, PB. The immersion in water at 60°C until cooling to the environment temperature and the scarification with sandpaper no 100, followed by water imbibition for 24 hours, showed higher percentages of emergence (72%) in relation to the other pre-germinating treatments, although they did not differ statistically from the control (68%). In relation to the emergence speed rate, the lower values occurred with sandpaper no 100 followed by imbibition for 48 hours (0,13) and immersion in water under 70°C to the environment temperature (0,18). Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência de diferentes métodos pré-germinativos para superar a dormência de sementes de sapoti (Achras sapota L.). Os tratamentos utilizados foram: testemunha, imersão em água a 60°C e 70°C até resfriamento à temperatura ambiente (27ºC); escarificação com lixa no 100, seguida de embebição em água à temperatura ambiente por 24 e 48 horas; e estratificação, em areia, na geladeira (10±1°C) por cinco dias. As sementes foram semeadas a uma profundidade de 2 cm, em bandejas com substrato areia + esterco (3:1) e distribuídas em quatro repetições de 25 sementes, sob condições de casa de vegetação no Setor de Sementes do Centro de Ciências Agrárias da UFPB, Areia - PB. A imersão em água a 60°C até resfriamento e a escarificação com lixa no 100, seguida de embebição em água por 24 horas, apresentaram maiores percentagens de emergência (72%) em relação aos demais tratamentos pré-germinativos, embora não tenham diferido estatisticamente da testemunha (68%). Com relação ao índice de velocidade de emergência, os menores valores foram obtidos quando se utilizou a escarificação com lixa no 100 seguida de embebição por 48 horas (0,13), e a imersão em água a 70°C até resfriamento (0,18). Portanto, não devem ser usados como tratamentos pré-germinativos em sementes de sapoti.
