PHYSIOLOGIC QUALITY OF SEEDS AND AGRONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF SWEET CORN GENOTYPES

Resumo: This study was developed to evaluate the agronomic performance and  physiological quality of seeds of six commercial sweet corn simple hybrids, fifteen double hybrids obtained from crossings among the simple hybrids, taken two by two, and one control. The field phase was conducted in Goiânia (16°35'S, 49°21'W and 730 m of altitude), in a clay Oxisol. It was used a randomized complete design,  with four replications. The yield, percentage of standard ears without straw, percentage of industrial yield, total soluble solids content, measured chlorophyll content, and total sugars content were determined. The germination tests cold without soil  (modified), accelerated aging, and tetrazolium were carried out for physiological quality seed evaluation. From the physiological tests, the percentage values and emission indexes of primary root were calculated. The results showed genetic potential among the genotypes tested for agronomic characters and seed quality. Thus, the use of those genotypes in plant breeding programs could happen through the composite  obtention of inbred lines, mainly for the characters productivity of ears with straw, industrial yield, chlorophyll content, and modified cold test.KEY-WORDS: Zea mays; total sugar; vigor; chlorophyll.

Este estudo buscou avaliar o desempenho agronômico e a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de seis híbridos simples comerciais de milho doce, quinze híbridos duplos obtidos dos cruzamentos entre os híbridos simples, tomados dois a dois, e uma testemunha. A fase de campo foi conduzida em Goiânia (16°35'S, 49º21'W e altitude média de 730 m), num Latossolo vermelho-escuro de textura argilosa. Empregou-se o delineamento de blocos completos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Foram determinados a produtividade, porcentagem de espigas padrão despalhadas, porcentagem de rendimento industrial, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, teor de clorofila e teor de açúcares totais. Para as avaliações de qualidade fisiológica das sementes, foram realizados os seguintes testes de germinação: frio sem solo (modificado), envelhecimento acelerado e tetrazólio. A partir dos testes fisiológicos, foram calculados os valores percentuais e os índices de emissão de raiz primária. Os resultados mostraram que existe potencial genético entre os genótipos testados, tanto para os caracteres agronômicos, como para qualidade de semente. Assim, a exploração destes genótipos no programa de melhoramento poderá ocorrer por meio da obtenção de compostos para extração de linhagens, principalmente para os caracteres produtividade de espigas com palha, rendimento industrial, teor de clorofila e teste de frio modificado.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Zea mays; açúcares totais; vigor; clorofila.
