ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT POST EUREPGAP CERTIFICATION FOR PINEAPPLE PRODUCTION IN GUARAÇAÍ, SÃO PAULO STATE, BRAZIL

Resumo: The article addresses the role of certification in agricultural development. For that, an assessment of environmental impacts of certification under the European Retailers Produce Working Group - Good Agricultural Practices (EurepGap) was carried out in rural establishments dedicated to the pineapple production in Guaraçaí, São Paulo State (Brazil), a leading producing region in the country. EurepGap is a certification procedure based on Good Agricultural Practices, with voluntary participation, that intends to meet the consumers interests, in terms of food safety, animal welfare, environmental protection and health, and workers safety and welfare. The approach proposed in this article focuses on agricultural certification as a process that can contribute towards the reduction of environmental impacts, as assessed with the Ambitec-Agro integrated indicators system. Para isso, foi realizada uma avaliação de impactos ambientais da certificação European Retailers Produce Working Group - Good Agricultural Practices (EurepGap), através de um estudo de caso, em unidades produtoras de abacaxi, no município de Guaraçaí (SP), um dos principais pólos produtores do país. O EurepGap é um procedimento de certificação baseado em boas práticas agrícolas, com participação voluntária,que apresenta como objetivo atender aos interesses dos consumidores, em termos de segurança alimentar, bem-estar animal, proteção ambiental e saúde, segurança e bem-estar do trabalhador. A abordagem proposta no presente artigo focaliza a certificação agrícola vista como instrumento que pode contribuir para a redução dos impactos ambientais, segundo avaliação procedida com o sistema integrado de indicadores Ambitec-Agro.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Abacaxi; EurepGap; certificação ambiental.
