Resumo: A serological study of Babesia caballi was performed in 512 serum samples of equines in the micro-region of Goiânia. The prevalence of antibodies anti-Babesia caballi determined by the immunofluorescent antibody test was 90.8%, i.e. 465 out of 512 serum were positive. All serum were tested in dilutions ranging from 1:40 to 1:2560. The most frequent titer was 1:320. No statistically significant differences were observed among age groups, breeds, species and sex. Based on these results the region was characterized as a highly enzootic area for B. caballi. The economic importance of the disease in the region was considered to be related to the potential risk that it shows for susceptible animals imported from free areas. A prevalência de anticorpos anti-B. caballi, determinada através da reação de imunofluorescência indireta, foi de 90,8%, correspondendo a 465 soros positivos. Os soros foram testados nas diluições de 1:40 a 1:2560. O título mais freqüente foi 1:320. Não foi verificada nenhuma diferença estatisticamente significativa ente os resultados para diferentes faixas etárias, raças, espécies ou sexo. De acordo com estes resultados a região estudada foi caracterizada como uma área de elevada estabilidade enzoótica para B. caballi. Conclui-se, portanto, que a maior importância econômica da enfermidade causada por este parasito, na microrregião de Goiânia, se concentra no risco em potencial que expõe a animais suscetíveis importados de áreas livres da infecção.
