“O homem que enxergava a Morte” is a narrative text that is part of the collection Contos de Enganar a Morte, written by Ricardo Azevedo. Inspired by folklore, the story details the adventures of a very poor man who chose death as his son's godmother and who would can the possibility to see her in certain situations. The objective of this research was to analyze how the study of the short story allows the understanding of issues involving thanatology, understanding that literature is a phenomenon capable of expressing meanings in relation to the process of death and dying. The method used to analysis was of a qualitative nature, based on bibliographic studies. The analysis of the results was premised on issues involving thanatopedagogy, based on Grzybowski's (2014) proposal. It is concluded that the literary text is an important element to discuss issues related to the process of death and dying, being possible to use it as a pedagogical resource to address these issues and enhance reflections and debates on the subject.
