Influência da ferramenta de redução de artefatos em tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico no diagnóstico de fraturas radiculares verticais

Vertical root fractures (VRFs) represent a challenge for the dental surgeon in relation to their diagnosis and treatment. The presence of high field-of-view (FOV) materials in the field of vision in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images can cause a range of artifacts that affect image quality, impairing the identification of structures and visualization of the region of interest. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of metal artifact reduction (MAR) on the diagnosis of VRF. For this, 45 extracted permanent human teeth (premolars) were fractured and divided into 3 groups: 15 teeth no filling, 15 teeth with gutta- percha and 15 teeth with metal post. A phantom was obtained with a macerated jaw and images of CBCT on Orthopantomograph 300 (OP 300) device were acquired with and without the use of MAR. Later those images were evaluated for the presence or absence of fracture. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was obtained using SPSS Statistics software 22 to calculate the area under the device curve on the use of the artifact reduction tool. The results demonstrated that the use of RA obtained the lowest results of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for the subgroups tested. It was concluded that MAR had a negative influence on the diagnosis of VRF for all tested subgroups (no filling, gutta- percha and metal post).
