Religious Tolerance in Eighteenth Century France: the idea of superstition in Voltaire's thought

Resumo: This paper aims to analyze the notion of superstition in Voltaire’s work in the framework of restriction of civil rights and harsh persecution of Protestants in Eighteenth century France. First, we present considerations on the political and legal context of France in that century, identifying norms that restricted Protestants rights in an officially Catholic country. We also point concrete cases of trials marked by religious intolerance in which Voltaire took part, showing his role not only in theoretical discussions, but also in practical experience. Finally, we get to the relation between illuminists and the question of fanaticism and superstition, developing some thoughts on this concept in Voltaire’s work, always relating it to the topic of tolerance. It’s shown the role that him, such as many of his Enlightenment colleagues, attributed to Reason and Philosophy in the fight against superstition and in enlightening, supporting religious tolerance and the quest for the Protestants rights in a France where,historically, the different was rejected.

Inicialmente, se presentan consideraciones sobre el contexto político y jurídico de Francia en ese siglo, identificando las normas que restringían los derechos de los protestantes en un país oficialmente católico. También se citan casos concretos de juicios marcados por la intolerancia religiosa en los que actuó Voltaire, lo que demuestra la actuación no sólo en las discusiones teóricas, sino también a nivel práctico realizada por el filósofo. A partir de ahí, llegamos a la relación entre la Ilustración y la cuestión del fanatismo y la superstición, desarrollando consideraciones sobre este concepto en Voltaire, relacionándolo siempre con el tema de la tolerancia. Sigue siendo evidente el papel que el autor, al igual que muchos de sus colegas de la Ilustración, confirió a la Razón y a la Filosofía en la lucha contra la superstición y la ilustración, favoreciendo la tolerancia religiosa y la búsqueda de los derechos de los protestantes en una Francia donde, históricamente, se rechazaba lo diferente.O presente trabalho visa a analisar a noção de superstição na obra de Voltaire, principalmente no paradigma do cerceamento de direitos civis e de perseguições ferrenhas aos protestantes na França do século XVIII. Inicialmente, são apresentadas considerações sobre o contexto político e jurídico da França no referido século, identificando normas que cerceavam direitos dos protestantes em um país oficialmente católico. São citados também casos concretos de julgamentos marcados pela intolerância religiosa nos quais agiu Voltaire, demonstrando a atuação não apenas em discussões teóricas, mas também em nível prático feita pelo filósofo. A partir daí, chega-se à relação entre os iluministas e a questão do fanatismo e da superstição, desenvolvendo-se considerações sobre esse conceito em Voltaire, sempre relacionando-o ao tema da tolerância.
