From ‘being alone’ to ‘just being': an analysis of the song ‘Preciso aprender a só ser’ by Gilberto Gil and its (con)texts

Summary: This paper undertakes an analysis of the song Preciso aprender a só ser (1973) by Gilberto Gil, evincing the links established by him between his composition and the song Preciso aprender a ser só (1965), by Marcos and Paulo Sérgio Valle. Through the analysis of the lyrics, the harmony and concepts from intertextuality studies, we seek to understand how Gil operated on these structures, aiming to replace the 'being alone' (ser só) for 'just being' (só ser) in different levels of the song. Preciso aprender a só ser is also construed in the context of the symbolic show Gilberto Gil presented at USP in 1973, in order to contextualize the song from the socio-political reality inherent in the presentation.

Partiendo del entendimiento de que Gil establece este diálogo con la canción de referencia no sólo a través de la letra, sino también en la armonía y en las capas intertextuales, se pretende aclarar a partir de este análisis cómo Gil operó sobre estas estructuras, para realizar la sustitución semántica de 'ser só' a 'só ser' en todos estos niveles de la canción. También se investiga la canción 'Preciso aprender a só ser' en el contexto del famoso concierto de Gilberto Gil en la USP en 1973, explicando en la práctica la actualización del discurso propuesto por Gil, situado en los conflictos que impregnan la realidad sociopolítica inherente a la presentación.O presente trabalho realiza uma análise da canção Preciso aprender a só ser (1973), de Gilberto Gil, explicitando o paralelo estabelecido pelo mesmo entre sua composição e a canção Preciso aprender a ser só (1965), dos irmãos Marcos e Paulo Sérgio Valle. Por meio da análise da letra, da harmonia e de referências advindas dos estudos da intertextualidade, procura-se esclarecer como Gil operou sobre essas estruturas com o intuito de realizar a substituição semântica do ‘ser só’ para o ‘só ser’ em diferentes camadas da canção.
