Resumo: This is one qualitative-exploratory research that aimed to outline the profile of female surfers and investigate which factors serve as supports and barriers to their sports engagement in the metropolitan area of Vitória/ES. The methodology adopted was field research with data collection carried out using a survey answered by 35 women. Content analysis was adopted to interpret the data. The results showed that support for women’s surfing includes the influence and encouragement of family or friends and the local community. The barriers are limited to lack of time, domestic and academic responsibilities, lack of adequate transportation combined with the perception of a majority presence of men on the beaches and the discrimination suffered by the participants. We can conclude that the increase in female participation in surfing is happening, but there is a lack of initiatives that could attract more women to the sport.
