Historiographical criticism in Brazil in the 1990s and the specter of the linguistic turn: clashes between “modern” and “postmodern”

Resumo: This article discusses how historiographical criticism in Brazil has transformed the linguistic turn into a specter to haunt Clio’s disciplinary territories and boundaries, threatening the craft of professional academic historians. This is thought based on  a debate occurred in 1993, held on the celebration of the 20th birthday of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation’s CPDOC, between Hayden White and Roger Chartier, two important debaters on the subject of linguistic turn and its implications for the historian’s work. The texts of both historians, published in 1994, in a commemorative edition of Revista Estudos Históricos - REH, were a model for the theoretical-methodological debates that were carried out from then on by professional historians, scholars and mainly by those who criticized historiography, giving support, in special, to the evaluation of “the state of the art” in the country. This debate reverberated over the 90’s and 2000’s in the discussions that opposed “modern” and “postmodern” and on the configuration of geography and disciplinary memory of historical knowledge in Brazil.

Penso isso a partir de um suposto debate ocorrido em 1993, por ocasião dos 20 anos do Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação de História Contemporânea do Brasil, CPDOC, da Fundação Getúlio Vargas, entre dois expoentes dos debates que orbitavam a “virada linguística” e suas implicações para o fazer do historiador, Hayden White e Roger Chartier. Os textos de ambos, publicadas em 1994, na edição comemorativa da Revista Estudos Históricos – REH, servirão de modelo para os debates teórico-metodológicos que os historiadores profissionais, acadêmicos, sobretudo aqueles que se arvoravam como críticos historiográficos, iriam estabelecer dali por diante, em especial quando estavam avaliando o “estado da arte” no país.
