The whip and the laughter: the republican historiography of Joaquim Felício dos Santos

Resumo: This paper examines the rhetorical and communication strategies used by the Brazilian republican tradition to regulate the historical field in the 19th century. Aiming to answer the central question of whether the political ethics is a metahistorical element, this study approaches the concept of republicanism as a government system (Bobbio), an ethics (Catroga), and a political language (Pocock), in the light of the contributions of Joaquim Felício dos Santos, especially his political and satirical articles published in the newspaper O Jequitinhonha (1861-1874). The results indicate some typical characteristics in the republican historiographic tradition, such as: transdisciplinarity, an antimonarchical vocabulary, the effort to translate scientific knowledge into journalistic and satirical settings, a connection with the history of modernity, and the anachronism as an authority argument.

O republicanismo é abordado como forma de governo (BOBBIO), ética (CATROGA) e linguagem política (POCOCK) para refletir sobre uma questão central: é possível falar em ética política como elemento meta-histórico? O objeto de análise é a obra de Joaquim Felício dos Santos, especialmente seus artigos políticos e satíricos publicados no jornal O Jequitinhonha (1861-1874).
