Resumo: We propose that the second edition of Raízes do Brasil (1936), published in 1948, represents the epitome of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda’s negative turn towards his generation partner Gilberto Freyre. The incisive changes made in this particular edition of the classic book cannot be understood without considering the constraint of the influence exerted by Casa-grande & Senzala (1933) and the mechanisms of consecration appropriated by Holanda in the institutional space, from the end of the 1940s onwards. Therefore, in addition to the first two editions of Raízes do Brasil and the classic work by Freyre, we will use some writings from before and after this milestone, 1948, in order to present the historicity of this interlocution, ranging from literary competition to the dispute for interpretation of Brazil through epistemological questions in essay form; we will touch on the disagreements that are part of the symbolic battles in the intellectual field, from which Freyre’s name is anathematized.
