The macrophyte decomposition is a key process in certain aquatic environments. The study objective was to analyze wich invertebrate groups stand out during decomposition and if these have any influence on the process. The invertebrate colonization during decomposition of Eleocharis minima Kunth and a representative mixture of macrophytes containing E. minima, Egeria najas Planchon and Nymphoides indica Kuntze was assessed trough the litterbag method. The litterbags were made of different mesh sizes (2cm and 500μm) in order to allow different invertebrate groups to participate in the process. The study was carried out in Lagoa dos Coutos, a temporary pond in the Gandarela range, which is part of the Iron Quadrangle in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. A total of 24505 individuals were collected and 28 taxa were identified. The largest group in abundance was Acari (74.9%), due to the disproportional quantity of Hydrozetes sp.in all samples. The second highest abundance group was Chironomidae, with 2258 individuals (9.2%), followed by Naididae, with 974 (3.9%). Caenis fittkaui was the only Ephemeroptera species found, with 387 individuals (1.5%). The results suggest that the assembly was different in the different litterbags mesh and densities were significantly smaller (P<0.00; P<0.00). However, this difference had no effect over the decomposition rates in none of the studied macrophytes (P=0.503; P=0.36). The decomposition time was a significative factor in the variation of the invertebrate assembly (P<0.00), though this difference wasn’t pronounced, affecting mainly Cladocera. The decomposition rate of E. minima was low (k=0.0062±0.0007, fine mesh; k=0.0065±0.0008, coarse mesh). The macrophyte mixture got higher decomposition rates than E. minima (k=0.0082±0.0015, fine mesh; k=0.0150±0.0023, coarse mesh). The invertebrate assembly was unaffected by the macrophyte composition in the litterbag (P=0.22). The results indicate that the invertebrate assembly is not a determinant functional component of the decomposition process, as the control group (coarse mesh) yielded no gains in the decomposition rate in comparison to the partial exclusion experiment. Still, the decomposition state affected the invertebrate assembly succession.
