Resumo: The Teaching of Reading practiced at school aims to develop the student's literary literacy, so that they take ownership of the functions that the literary text plays in the reader's life. For the literary literacy development, it is necessary to activate several reading strategies to achieve the desired goal, which is to make students proficient in reading. The school, for some students, is the only space in which they have contact with books, thus the teacher is the mediator and responsible for stimulating this practice. With this audience in mind, a proposal for literary reading was developed for a 3rd year high school class at Ardalião Américo Pires school in the city of Barra do Corda/MA, Brazil. To support this study, the theoretical frameworks of Cosson (2006; 2014), Martins (2006), and Vieira (2017) were used. The reading proposal was developed through four two-hour workshops performed weekly for one month, in the form of an expanded sequence. Two chapters were selected for extra-class reading, mediated by the teacher who defined some possible themes, so that during the following classes there were discussions, written productions, and debates. This way, the class was involved in improving literary literacy.
