Resumo: The present work of dissertation tries to understand the mechanisms that preside the melancholy and its possible influences in the literary creation, from a cut in the work of the writer João Guimarães Rosa. For its execution, the text begins with a historical tracing of melancholy from antiquity, with Hippocrates, through the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, and finally summoning the psychoanalytic approach, especially through the work of Sigmund Freud, to, from hence, to analyze the literary work of the author, and try to understand how far melancholy may have influenced or not in its production.
