This research proposes a reflection on the conception of Material Culture as a source of information and memory, based on the analysis of articles published in scientific journals on archaeological artifacts, having as a specific element the research of studies focused on rock painting, structuring possible referrals for that this reading be done as faithfully as possible. Throughout the analysis we problematize the conception of information, material culture and memory. Characterize the understanding of material culture as a source / support of information in the construction of social / collective memory. For its execution, some objectives were indicated, such as: To instrumentalize the conceptualization of Memory within the scope of Information Science; Contextualize the notion of information as a human product within a sociocultural context; to verify the composition of the notion of material culture directed to the scope of Information Science. We made a comparison of the studied concepts (memory, material culture and information) highlighting the ones that we take as reference in the construction of this work, trying to identify the fundamental attributes that define these concepts, in a subsequent moment demonstrated how we built our thinking about material culture as a source of knowledge. information and memory, taking as a starting point rock paintings focusing on the main concepts of material culture, information and memory. From the point of view of the researcher, the information contained in rock art may not be what was intended or even suggested, but in itself, is already information, making possible a re-reading of signs, even if they do not follow their original meaning they reveal traces of a civilization referring to important information of the daily life of a society.
