O Pagador de Promessas: dramaticidade e tragicidade, da literatura ao cinema

This research investigates the production of dramatic and tragic effects in the theatre play O Pagador de Promessas, written by Dias Gomes, in 1959, as well as in its homonymous filmic adaptation, directed by Anselmo Duarte, in 1962. The play reveals cultural clashes through social conflicts dramatized by characters who not only lend verisimilitude to the text, but also make the fictional world closer to real life. The humble peasant Zé do Burro is a notable example of a modern hero, whose downfall results not from powers superior to mankind, such as divinities or destiny, but from his own conscious will. However, though categorized as a modern drama, O Pagador de Promessas exhibits characteristics of classical tragedy. Thus, this work retrieves the processes of actualization of classical dramatic categories in Dias Gomes‟ social drama, based on theoretical concepts formulated by Aristotle, Horace, Hegel, Peter Szondi, Raymond Williams, Albin Lesky, among others. Concerning the analyses of the filmic text, we have used concepts formulated by Christian Metz, Gérard Betton, James Dudley Andrew, among others, searching for the produced dramatic and tragic effects in the light of the theoretical set of concepts related to the dramatic universe, but taking into account the peculiarities of the filmic language, so as to approach a legitimate interdisciplinary comparative study between dramaturgy and cinema. In relation to the investigations of both the dramatic universe and the filmic adaptations, texts by Prof. Dr. Sandra Luna and by Prof. Dr. João Batista de Brito have been of fundamental importance to the formulation of our ideas, guiding us through the theoretical trends pursued in the development of this research.
