Resumo: Recent research within the scope of intonation have demonstrated the importance of the development of phonic competences in the acquisition and teaching of additional languages. In this study, the acoustic-perceptive method Melodic Analysis of Speech (MAS) was adopted to investigate intonational characteristics of Brazilian Portuguese spoken by south-Korean speakers with the purpose of identifying intonative phenomena relevant for the development of their phonic competences in a linguistic and prelinguistic perspective of intonation. The results show potential inadequacies in the use of declarative and interrogative melodic patterns already described for Brazilian Portuguese. Such inadequacies may lead to difficulty in communication in the cases where incongruity between melodic patterns and the speaker’s communicative goal occurs. The results also suggest some elements of the south-Korean learners’ melodic profile that may indicate characteristics of their foreign accent when speaking Portuguese.
