Para o delineamento foram consultados os relatórios de quatro escolas de Curitiba, correspondentes a 1982. As questões propostas para estudo referem-se: a) aos principais objetivos propostos pelas escolas; b) as atividades desenvolvidas para o atingimento desses objetivos; c) a relação entre esses objetivos e recomendações de ordem geral referentes a atividades consideradas apropriadas a deficientes mentais. A literatura consultada focalizou: a) concepções gerais de currículo como campo de estudo; b) aspectos legais de educação especial no Brasil; c) recomendações de atividades referidas acima. A amostra selecionada para o estudo foi composta de quatro das nove instituições de educação especial existentes em Curitiba. O critério usado para a seleção da amostra foi o de atendimento diário, regular; portanto, as instituições que oferecem apenas atendimento clínico foram excluídas. As escolas selecionadas foram: Escola Tia Nilza, Escola Ecumênica, Escola Especializada Primavera e Escola Mercedes Stresser - Centro de Habilitação Profissional. A análise dos relatórios focalizou os objetivos estabelecidos pelas instituições e as atividades desenvolvidas para o atingimento desses objetivos. Foram analisados, também, os recursos disponíveis nas instituições bem como suas estruturas básicas. Nenhuma das escolas da amostra dispunha de currículo estruturado e esta deficiência parece existir a nível nacional. Os objetivos propostos pelas instituições enfatizam a normalização, um enfoque amplamente criticado pelos autores cujos estudos foram resenhados na revisão da literatura. Tratou-se, também, a ausência de um diagnóstico etiológico das crianças que frequentam as instituições. Um teste de QI é utilizado no lugar de um diagnóstico médico. O estudo possibilitou a formulação de recomendação a respeito da educação de deficientes mentais. Sugestões para estudos mais abrangentes são também formulados.Abstract: The major objective of this study was to work about a diagnosis of schools whose clientele is made of mentally retarded children. For the analysis, the 1982 Reports of four Curitiba schools were used. The major questions addressed in this study were related to: a) the main objectives of the schools; b) the means whereby these objectives were achieved; and c) the relationship between these objectives and general recommendations concerning activities that are deemed appropriate to mentally retarded children. The literature reviewed focused on; a) general conceptualizations about curriculum as a field of study; b) the legal aspects of special education in Brazil; and c) the recommended activities alluded to above. The sample selected for the study was made up of four of the nine special education institutions existing in Curitiba. The criterion used for the selection of the sample was that of an offer only clinical help were excluded from the study. The schools selected were: Escola Tia Nilza, Escola Ecumênica, Escola Especializada Primavera and Escola Mercedes Stresser-Centro de Habilitação Profissional. The analysis of the Reports concentrated on the objectives established by the institutions and on the activities developed to achieve these objectives. Also analyzed were the resources available at the institutions as well as their basic structure. None of the schools in the sample presented a structured curriculum, and this seems to be a nationwide deficiency. The underlying tenet of the objectives proposed by the institutions is one of mainstreaming towards normalization, an approach which was highly criticized by the authors whose studies were discussed in the review of the literature. Also noted was the lack an etiological diagnosis of children who attended the institutions. A QI test is used in lieu of the medical diagnosis. The study made possible some recommendations concerning the education of mentally retarded children.
