Sexuality on nursing assistance: reflections on a cultural perspective

Resumo: This study aimed to understand sexuality and how the construction of its meanings, symbols, feelings, and values is developed. The data were collected through focal group techniques and individual interviews with nurses. The emerging feelings were: embarrassment; fear; surprise; challenge; sorrow; worry, and personal satisfaction. The experience with the sexuality on nursing assistance revealed: the presence of a pathological and biological perspective in the action of nursing, showing this dimension as something that needs to be medically treated; on the other hand, it showed that this theme can be a way to self-knowledge, rethinking concepts, values and conflicts, as well as producing nursing care in a more ethical, committed and empathetic way, thus valuing the dignity of the ones cared for and the ones who take care.

Los datos fueron colectados a través del grupo focal y la entrevista individual, junto a enfermeras. Los sentimientos emergentes fueron: vergüenza; miedo; sorpresa; desafío; decepción; preocupación y satisfacción personal. La vivencia de la sexualidad en la asistencia de la enfermería reveló: la presencia de perspectiva patológica y biológica en la actuación de la enfermera, mostrando esta dimensión como algo que necesita ser medicado; por otro lado, exhibió que este tema puede ser el camino para el auto-conocimiento, reflexión de conceptos, valores y conflictos, también como ser generador de un cuidado ético, comprometido y empático de la enfermería, valorizando así la dignidad de los sujetos cuidados y de los cuidadores.Este estudo objetivou compreender a sexualidade, seus significados, simbolizações, sentimentos e valores. Os dados foram coletados através de grupo focal e entrevista individual com enfermeiras. Os sentimentos emergentes foram: constrangimento; medo; surpresa; desafio; mágoa; preocupação e satisfação pessoal.
