Resumo: This qualitative study with a phenomenological approach aimed at understanding what it means to be a family caregiver of a child living with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in the light of Martin Buber’s philosophy. The study was carried out at the Pediatric outpatient Unit of a teaching hospital of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil with the participation of 7 family caregivers. Data was collected between September and October, 2006 using phenomenological interviews, and interpreted using Ricouer’s hermeneutics. The ethical issues were considered. Being a family member of a child with AIDS is a complex existential phenomenon including changes, caring, dialogues, and concerns in search of the wellbeing of both children and caretaker in the world. Understanding the meaning of these phenomena the life of these families is essential to Nursing in order to plan and to develop a humanistic, ethical, esthetical, and solidary care.

El estudio se realizó en el Ambulatorio de Pediatría de un hospital escuela de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, y tuvo como participantes a siete familiares cuidadores de estos niños. La recolección de las informaciones se dio entre los meses de septiembre y octubre de 2006 por medio de la entrevista fenomenológica y, para la interpretación, se utilizó la filosofía hermenéutica de Ricouer. Los temas éticos fueron respetados. Ser familiar de un niño con SIDA se revela un fenómeno existencial complejo por los cambios, cuidados y preocupaciones que implica en la búsqueda por un ‘estar mejor’ de ambos en el mundo. Comprender los significados que estos fenómenos adquieren en la vida de estos familiares es de fundamental importancia para la Enfermería, para poder planificar y desarrollar el cuidado humanístico, ético, estético y solidario que se desea.Estudo qualitativo, de abordagem fenomenológica, que buscou compreender o que é ser familiar cuidadora de criança que vive com a Síndrome da Imunodeficiência Adquirida (AIDS), à luz da filosofia de Martin Buber. Realizou- se no Ambulatório de Pediatria de um hospital-escola de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, e teve como participantes sete familiares cuidadoras destas crianças. A coleta das informações ocorreu entre os meses de setembro e outubro de 2006 por meio da entrevista fenomenológica e, na interpretação, utilizou-se a filosofia hermenêutica de Ricouer. Ser familiar de criança com AIDS revela-se um fenômeno existencial complexo de mudanças, cuidados, diálogos e preocupações, na busca por um estar-melhor de ambos, no mundo.
