We present a descriptive study of the distribution of pronominal clitics used in g oral language of natives of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. Our objective is to investigate Whether this system is in the same stage of linguistic change as the Brazilian Portuguese BP), as already indicated by the parametric studies of Pagotto (1992, 1993), Cyrino (1993, 2000) and Nunes (1991). We analysed data from the VARSUL Project using three » « dependent variables: “order”, “anaphoric option for object position” and “types of clitics y age and education”. The results indicate that the system of pronominal clitics in the peech of natives of Porto Alegre is in the same stage of linguistic change as the BP, con ing the processes identified by the previously mentioned authors.
