Resumo: Introduction: The Subacromial Impingement Syndrome (SIS) is one of the most common painful conditions of the shoulder and it has as main symptoms pain and decrease of function. In the clinical context, the measurement of range of movement, strength, and self-report function questionnaire can be used in the evaluation of the affected subjects. However, few studies present the relationship between the questionnaire of self-reported functional measures and strength. Objective: To evaluate the relation between shoulder muscles isometric strength and the self-reported function of the individuals with the unilateral SIS. Methods: This is an observational study which was developed in the Physical Therapy Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. In total, 23 subjects (15 man and 8 women; 34,47±10,15 years old; BMI of 24,2±2,23 kg/m2) with clinical symptoms of unilateral of SIS participated in this study. The sampling was a non-probabilistic one of consecutive cases. The subjects were evaluated by a manual dynamometer the isometric strength of shoulder in scapular elevation, and lateral and medial rotations, bilaterally. For the shoulder functional evaluation, the Brazilian version of the Penn Shoulder Score (PSS) was used. The data were statistically analyzed in a descriptive and inferential manner. The Shapiro Wilk test was used for the sample distribution, the t-Student test was used for evaluate the differences between the sides, and the Pearson test for the correlation between the isometric strength and the self-reported function. Results: The isometric strength for internal (p=0,025) and external (p=0,022) rotations presented statistical differences between the affected and non-affected sides. The symptomatic side showed a deficit of 7,69% for the internal rotation and 5,49% for the external rotation, when the sides are compared. Therefore, the strength reduction, no significant correlation was found between the isometric strength and the self-reported function. Conclusion: the affected side of the individuals with unilateral SIS shows a strength deficit with respect to the contralateral side, but there was no significant correlation between the isometric strength and the self-reported function by the PSS.
