Resumo: | The objective of the study was to evaluate growth and yield of cowpea beans in single crop or intercropped with pearl millet during the dry and rainy. There were four experiments conducted in the Experimental Station of the Department of Crop Science, the UFRuralRJ. The first experiment was conducted in the rainy season and the second in the dry season, to assess the mass accumulated at the pre-flowering stage,, potential biological fixation, yield components and equivalence ratio of area (IEA), in a complete randomized block design, with three replications and five treatments: T1- single crop of pearl millet (0.50 m between rows of pearl millet: 1M), T2- single crop of cowpea beans (0.50 m between the rows of cowpea: 1C), T3- intercrop with a line of pearl millet and cowpea line with 0.50 m between rows: 1M x 1C-0, 50), T4- intercrop with a line of pearl millet and cowpea line with 0.75 m between rows: 1M x 1C-0, 75), T5- intercrop with one line of cowpea between two lines of pearl millet with 0.50 m between all rows: 1M x 2C-0, 50). In addition, a third and fourth experiment were installed to make the analysis of growth of cowpea in the dry season and rainy seasons, respectively, using the treatments of single crop of cowpea and the intercrop used with the highest IEA obtained in the first and second experiment, both with or without 20 kg N ha-1. The experimental design was also in a randomized block design, with four replications and four treatments: T1- single crop of cowpea without nitrogen fertilizer, T2- single crop of cowpea with 20 kg N ha-1, T3-intercrop of two cowpea lines between the lines of pearl millet, without nitrogen fertilization;T4- intercrop of two lines of cowpea between the lines of pearl millet, with 20 kg N ha-1. The variable IEA indicated advantages in grain yield of cowpea in intercropping system compared to the single crop, with the highest yield for cowpea intercropped with two lines of cowpea between the lines of pearl millet (1M x 2C-0, 50). Nitrogen fertilization and intercropping system did not affect the yield components evaluated in cowpea, with higher productivity in the single crop system, with the greatest number of plants per area. |

Foram conduzidas quatro s?ries de experimentos no Campo Experimental do Departamento de Fitotecnia, da UFRuralRJ. Sendo o primeiro experimento na ?poca das ?guas e o segundo na ?poca da seca, para avaliar o ?ndice de equival?ncia de ?rea (IEA) e potencial de fixa??o biol?gica, em um delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com tr?s repeti??es e cinco tratamentos: T1- cultura solteira de milheto (0,50 m entre as linhas de milheto: 1M), T2- cultura solteira de feij?o-caup? E o terceiro e quarto experimento com objetivo de avaliar a analise de crescimento do caupi na ?poca da seca e das ?guas, no cultivo solteiro e do consorcio que apresentou o melhor (IEA) obtidos no primeiro e segundo experimento; em um delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repeti??es e quatro tratamentos: T1- feij?o caup? solteiro sem aduba??o nitrogenada; T2- feij?o-caup? solteiro com aduba??o de plantio (20 kg de N ha-1); T3- consorcio de duas linhas de feij?o-caupi sem aduba??o nitrogenada entre linha de milheto; T4- consorcio de duas linhas de feij?o-caupi com aduba??o de plantio (20 kg de N ha-1) entre linha de milheto. Observou que vari?vel IEA indica vantagens na produtividade de gr?os do feij?o-caupi no sistema consorciado, comparado ao cultivo solteiro, com a maior produtividade do feij?o-caupi no consorcio de duas linhas de feij?o-caup? entre o milheto (1M x 2C-0,50).
