Resumo: Emerging adulthood is characterized as a transitional stage between adolescence and adulthood, which includes experimenting social roles and building life projects. At this stage of development, university experience can be an opportunity for growth and maturation in the intellectual sphere and in interpersonal relationships. However, when diagnosed with a chronic disease, young university students deal with biopsychosocial changes that make it difficult for them to adapt to academic requirements. Therefore, the objective of this qualitative research is to understand the impact of illness on the university life of emerging adults. For this, eight undergraduate students from a public university in the state of Rio de Janeiro, aged between 18 and 25 years and diagnosed with chronic non-communicable diseases, were invited to participate in a focus group carried out online. Students who accepted to participate in the study signed a consent form and answered individually, questionnaires to collect sociodemographic and medical-clinical data. The meetings, with three and five participants each, had a previously elaborated script, composed of guiding questions and dynamic acts that sought to investigate how the participants reconciled the university demands and care for their own health. The results were calculated using the descriptive phenomenological method. Four main thematic axes were highlighted: (1) self-care strategy: keeping the disease under control, (2) challenges of reconciling academic demands and health needs, (3) importance of social and institutional support: between the perceived and the desired and finally, (4) the potential of spaces for exchange and discussion about living with chronic diseases: support and dissemination. The groups allowed university students to express their emotions, thoughts and opinions about living with a chronic disease at the university, therefore, relevant aspects were learned to understand the unique needs and characteristics of this public. It is concluded that this knowledge is important to help prepare programs and/or guidance aimed at the well-being of university students who experience different types of chronic diseases.

Nessa fase do desenvolvimento, a viv?ncia universit?ria pode constituir uma oportunidade de crescimento e amadurecimento no ?mbito intelectual e nas rela??es interpessoais. Mas, ao ser diagnosticado com uma doen?a cr?nica, o jovem universit?rio precisar? lidar com mudan?as biopsicossociais que poder?o dificultar sua adapta??o ?s exig?ncias acad?micas. O objetivo dessa pesquisa qualitativa foi compreender o impacto do adoecimento sobre a vida universit?ria de adultos emergentes. Para isto, oito estudantes de gradua??o de uma universidade p?blica do estado do Rio de Janeiro, com idades entre 18 e 25 anos e diagnosticados com doen?as cr?nicas n?o transmiss?veis, foram convidados a participar de um Grupo Focal, realizado de modo online. Os alunos que aceitaram integrar o estudo assinaram um termo de consentimento e responderam, de modo individual, a question?rios para levantamento de dados sociodemogr?ficos e m?dico-cl?nicos. Os encontros, com tr?s e cinco participantes cada, contaram com um roteiro previamente elaborado, composto por quest?es norteadoras e din?micas de grupo que buscaram investigar como os participantes conciliavam as demandas universit?rias e os cuidados com a pr?pria sa?de. Os resultados foram analisados mediante o M?todo Fenomenol?gico Descritivo. Destacaram-se quatro eixos tem?ticos principais: (1) estrat?gias de autocuidado: mantendo a doen?a sob controle, (2) desafios da concilia??o entre demandas acad?micas e necessidades de sa?de, (3) import?ncia do suporte social e institucional: entre o percebido e o desejado e, por ?ltimo, (4) potencial dos espa?os de troca e discuss?o sobre viver com doen?as cr?nicas: apoio e visibilidade. Os grupos proporcionaram aos universit?rios expressarem suas emo??es, pensamentos e opini?es sobre viver com uma doen?a cr?nica na universidade, sendo, portanto, apreendidos aspectos relevantes para a compreens?o das necessidades e caracter?sticas singulares deste p?blico. description Emerging adulthood is characterized as a transitional stage between adolescence and adulthood, which includes experimenting social roles and building life projects. At this stage of development, university experience can be an opportunity for growth and maturation in the intellectual sphere and in interpersonal relationships. However, when diagnosed with a chronic disease, young university students deal with biopsychosocial changes that make it difficult for them to adapt to academic requirements. Therefore, the objective of this qualitative research is to understand the impact of illness on the university life of emerging adults. For this, eight undergraduate students from a public university in the state of Rio de Janeiro, aged between 18 and 25 years and diagnosed with chronic non-communicable diseases, were invited to participate in a focus group carried out online. Students who accepted to participate in the study signed a consent form and answered individually, questionnaires to collect sociodemographic and medical-clinical data. The meetings, with three and five participants each, had a previously elaborated script, composed of guiding questions and dynamic acts that sought to investigate how the participants reconciled the university demands and care for their own health. The results were calculated using the descriptive phenomenological method. Four main thematic axes were highlighted: (1) self-care strategy: keeping the disease under control, (2) challenges of reconciling academic demands and health needs, (3) importance of social and institutional support: between the perceived and the desired and finally, (4) the potential of spaces for exchange and discussion about living with chronic diseases: support and dissemination. The groups allowed university students to express their emotions, thoughts and opinions about living with a chronic disease at the university, therefore, relevant aspects were learned to understand the unique needs and characteristics of this public. It is concluded that this knowledge is important to help prepare programs and/or guidance aimed at the well-being of university students who experience different types of chronic diseases.
