Brazil is a pioneer country of the agricultural sector, having a great part of its economic return originated in this sector. Biomass is a highly sustainable resource and when applied to the right biotechnology is able to generate energy, fuel and highly profitable chemicals that can even replace the current energy matrix. Biomass residues are even more promising in these questions, since they are rejected and therefore do not present value to the economic chain, an alternative source that would be discarded and could become an added value. The main objective of this article is to propose the concept of biorefinery, applications, raw materials and economic impact that it is capable of generating in the energy matrix of a country, citing as example the two main current types of bio-refinery bioethanol and biodiesel.
