Percepção sobre aspectos da estética gengival entre estudantes de odontologia

The perception of gingival architecture plays an important role in the clinical planning of procedures that aim for aesthetic results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the aesthetic perception of gingival alterations among dental students. Questionnaires were applied to evaluate 16 photographs with digitally modified smiles containing four aesthetic alterations: position of the gingival zenith, gingival recession, interdental papila recession and the shape of the interdental papillae associated with diastemas. The sample consisted of 40 dentistry students from the 4th to the 9th period, from the Campus da Saúde of the Federal University of Sergipe (N = 40), aged between 18 and 35 years (23 ± 3.19), 26 (65%) women and 14 (35%) men. The D'Agostino-Pearson normality test was performed, the one-way ANOVA test and Tukey's complementary test were applied between groups of photos and the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparison test for intra-group analysis between periods. Gingival recessions of 4 mm in the lateral incisors and diastemas of 2 and 3 mm were the parameters considered less aesthetic by the students. Significant differences (p <0.05) were found in the photo evaluations between students from different periods, except in the group of photos with changes in the gingival zenith position. It was concluded that there were differences in the esthetic perception of the alterations evaluated among dental students, as well as between students from different periods of college.
