A percepção dos pescadores e a educação ambiental como subsídios para a conservação do Baixo São Francisco

Etnoichthyology and scientifc information were collected in the Lower São Francisco subsidized environmental education activities with students of the region. Interviewed were made with 20 fshermen through semi-structured questionnaires in the Porto Real do Colégio (AL) and Propriá (SE) municipalities. It was reported that most of the species of commercial native fshes disappeared, and introduced species have become frequent over the years, a fact that occurs after the construction of Xingó hydroelectric power plant. The environmental education activities consisted of lectures about the São Francisco River, visit to the fsh farming and stocking program. Students demonstrated partial knowledge of native fsh, and better related to introduced fshes Tilapia, Tambaqui and Tucunaré. They responded positively to the activities, demonstrating enthusiasm for the content through eminent participation. It is believed that this occurred both the content dealing with local issues such as the development of diferent teaching practices. At the end, some students mentioned that act in the defense of the São Francisco River. These results emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary actions of this nature, as it enables interactivity, knowledge exchange between areas and stimuli for the formation of environmental awareness and citizen.
