Resumo: The principal purpose of this article is to identify some of the factors that cause teacher demotivation and in particular an "identity crisis" among this professional group. The paper begins by identifying some changes that have occurred in society and in educational systems that have implications on professional motivation. This analysis allows an understanding of the recent "crisis in motivations". Although this is a problem suffered by several professional groups, it has a specific character within the teaching profession that contributes to teacher demotivation and identity crisis. As an alternative analysis of this problem, the concept of teacher well-being is presented as well as ideas for research in this field.

Começa-se por identificar algumas das principais mudanças ocorridas na sociedade e nos sistemas educativos com impacto na motivação profissional. Esta análise permite compreender o fenómeno da "crise das motivações" da actualidade. Embora este fenómeno diga respeito a diversos grupos profissionais, a profissão docente comporta aspectos específicos que se procura salientar.
