Discourses that matter: agential realism and processes of bodily materialization

Resumo: The article proposes an effort of tensioning of poststructuralist feminist arguments about the relations established between discursive practices and the materiality of bodies. The text’s guiding thread is an interview with a woman who experiences a rare form of congenital malformation of the reproductive system. We interpellate, first through post-structuralist perspectives and then, based on Karen Barad’s agential realism, the interviewee's narrative about the processes of diagnosis and treatment of the condition of vaginal agenesis. We conclude that the advent of agential realism allows us to overcome the epistemic limits of constructivist theories about the processes of bodily materialization, ensuring a fundamental materialist complementation to such positions and evidencing the productive effectiveness of disciplinary power in all its empirical dimension.

El hilo conductor del texto es una entrevista con una mujer que vivencia una rara forma de malformación congénita del sistema reproductivo. Interpelamos, primero desde perspectivas postestructuralistas y luego, a partir del realismo agencial de Karen Barad, la narrativa de la entrevistada sobre los procesos de diagnóstico y tratamiento de la condición de agenesia vaginal. Concluimos que el adviento del realismo agencial permite superar los límites epistémicos de las teorías constructivistas sobre los procesos de materialización corporal, asegurando una complementación materialista fundamental a tales posiciones y evidenciando la eficacia productiva del poder disciplinario en toda su dimensión empírica.O artigo propõe um esforço de tensionamento dos argumentos feministas pós-estruturalistas sobre as relações estabelecidas entre práticas discursivas e a materialidade dos corpos. O fio condutor do texto é uma entrevista realizada com uma mulher que vivencia uma forma rara de malformação congênita do aparelho reprodutor. Interpelamos, primeiramente a partir das perspectivas pós-estruturalistas e, em seguida, com base no realismo agencial de Karen Barad, a narrativa da entrevistada sobre os processos de diagnóstico e tratamento da condição de agenesia vaginal.
