Resumo: The aim of study was to evaluate physical-chemical and microbiological parameters for two important bathing points of Guaiba Lake (Porto Alegre, Brasil). Thus, between May/94 and August/95, water samples were collected monthly at three points of Lami Beach and one point of Belém Velho Beach. The highest observed bacterial counts (MPN/100ml) were 5x 106 and 1.1x105, respectively, for Total Coliforms (TC) and Fecal Coliforms (FC). A statistical difference in the TC and FC couts was found between different beaches, but not between the physical- chemical and microbiological parameters studied. Among 26 tested E. coli strains, 84,6% were resistant against one to four antibiotics. Most strains were resistant against sulfo namide (88,4%) and streptomycin (34,6%). All E. coli strains were positive in the motility test and were nonhemolytic. Seven strin strains agglutinated with EPEC-antiserum and three agglutinated with EIEC- ntiserum.
