Revisiting the history of the Espirito Santo State Archives: from the "hidden" imperial origins at the beginning of the first republic

Considering the relevance of the identity of a state archival institution for recognition in public administration, the objective is to know the origins of the Espírito Santo State Archives and identify the most relevant temporal marks, practices and uses to the construction of this identity. As a procedure is adopted the documentary research and the approach is the qualitative analysis of textual data contained in the nineteenth-century legislative documentation and records of the beginning of the last century constituted in the investigation corpus. The materials are reports of presidents sent to the legislative assembly and executive decrees. The results point out that the documentary framework of 1908, recognized as the founder of the Archive, it occurred in a republican post-coup context during the reorganization of the administrative structures of the states with intention to obliterate the Empire. Despite uses restricted to the bureaucratic elite of the province, it’s conclude that the informational traces about the Archive evidence the persistent imperial origin demonstrating that the provincial archive can be considered, in fact, the embryo of the Espírito Santo State Archives. In addition, there are data on the existence of archivists, and archival practices legacies to the present, namely: storing, packaging, organizing, and controlling archival documentation. It also concludes that despite the variations of administrative status over the period studied, the custody is a preserved one central institutional practice of the Archive.
