What is taught in gender studies in Portugal: a bibliometric analysis of the syllabi

Objective: To map and identify bibliographic referencing patterns in the syllabi of master’s and Ph.D. courses in Women's, Gender, and Feminist Studies (WGFS) offered by Portuguese Public Universities Methods: Bibliometric analysis of the 448 references listed in the 84 course units that make up the three doctoral and four master's degree programs in WGFS, running in the 2021-22 academic year. Results: The most commonly used references in the analyzed courses are books published from the 1990s onwards, with a preponderance of individual authorship. The national bibliographic production is prevalent, although there is a significant weight of references published in other countries of Europe and North America, especially in English-speaking countries and by anglophone authors. The profile of references is diverse, in terms of the disciplinary origin of the authors, although essentially limited to the social sciences and humanities. Similarly, the themes addressed are diversified, with particular emphasis given to the problems of Identities and Sexualities, in which the dialogue with the areas of natural sciences is more present. Conclusions: The study allows us to delineate a profile of the WGFS training offer currently available in Portugal eminently theoretical, markedly post-structuralist, interdisciplinary, with remarkable opines to the debates conducted in other countries, but with scarce representation of works and authors from the Global South, reflecting the Anglo-Eurocentrism of the currently recommended bibliographies.
