Resumo: This paper aims at examining the interaction of ideational and interpersonal meanings in the representation of the protagonist’s insecurity in Into the Forest, by Anthony Browne. It focuses on patterns of complementary meanings in the image and verbiage in the representation of this central theme. The paper also explores semantic variations and the effects they are likely to have on the meaning construed in the interaction of ideational and interpersonal resources in the Brazilian Portuguese translation, Na floresta, by Clarice Duque Estrada. It takes the framework of visual narratives (Painter, Martin, and Unsworth) and of discourse-semantics (Martin and Rose, Genre relations, Working with discourse) as the theoretical basis for the study. The main results show that agency, repetition and synonymy intensify the feelings construed in the narrative and that semantic variations in the translated text are related to these resources.
