Brazil, "the champion of working accidents": social control, exploitation and prevention during the Brazilian military dictatorship

Resumo: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1984-9222.2014v7n13p151The suppression of civil and political liberties, the wage squeeze and the decline in the purchasing power of salaries of Brazilian workers were constituted as fundamental elements of the economic policy of the Brazilian military dictatorship installed in 1964. As a survival strategy, workers were compelled to work overtime, often in degrading conditions. The increase in productivity was accompanied by the exponential growth in the rates of work accidents and occupational diseases during this period. This article aims to analyse how the way the dictatorship dealt with that question reveals the class nature of the coup and the regime itself.

Como estratégia de sobrevivência, os trabalhadores foram pressionados a submeterem-se ao cumprimento de horas extras, muitas vezes em condições de trabalho degradantes. O aumento da produtividade veio acompanhado do crescimento exponencial dos índices de acidentes e doenças do trabalho durante esse período.
